Mosquitoes
Fight the Bite!
Mosquitoes are not only a strong nuisance, but they can also carry dangerous diseases like West Nile Virus, Encephalitis, Malaria, and Zika.  They can also transmit heartworm disease in dogs.
Common Mosquitoes in Illinois
The floodwater moquito is a common mosquito that lay their eggs in low-lying areas that will be flooded later.  After heavy rains, these biting mosquitoes will emerge and can be a major nuisance.  However, even though they are a vicious biter, they are not a significant disease carrier in Illinois.

The Culex or house mosquito is the one to watch out for.  It can be a carrier of diseases like West Nile.  These mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant ditches, tires, clogged gutters, potted plants, or anything else that holds water.

Treating for Mosquitoes
The best way to reduce mosquito populations is to eliminate their breeding sites.
  • Tires, buckets, bottles, cisterns, etc.
  • Empty plastic wading pools at least once per week.
  • Check for clogged gutters.
  • Change water in bird baths and drip tray on potted plants at least once per week.
  • Empty your pet's water bowls daily.
  • Fill in tree holes or stumps that can hold water.

A homeowner also has several options to protect against mosquitoes.
  • A quick knockdown spray can be applied when mosquitoes are active.  This is especially effective with the proper equipment.
  • Barrier or residual spraying can be applied to kill or repel mosquitoes from your yard.  Application should be done to mosquito harborages like shrubs, trees, fences, tall grass, decks, etc.
  • Repellents such as Fortress Max.  This natural product releases scents into the air that repel mosquitoes.
